Negotiators sign off on Dept. of Corrections Budget
June 9th, 2015 by Mike VasilindaThe Department of Corrections has been the subject of intense scrutiny after several escapes and high profile inmate deaths. Corrections Secretary Julie Jones has been using staff money to repair building, leading to a staff shortage and overworked guards. Today, budget negotiators signed off on a two billion dollar budget that provides money to hire staff and make repairs. The allocation means Jones won’t have to use staff money to fix building.
“What will change, in starting to fill positions,,,not hold vacancies, I’m going to be able to reach out to the respective communities around these facilities and hire the best and the brightest” says Jones.
Since January, Jones has hired 500 guards…she has at least 200 more vacancies.
