Lawmakers Keep On Trackin
June 18th, 2008 by flanewsLawmakers want to fight high gas prices with more public transportation. State senators met with Amtrak officials today to talk about building a rail system through Central Florida and the possibility of receiving federal funding to finance the project. There is already a commuter rail from Jacksonville to Miami with about 20 stops in-between. Senator Paula Dockery said people need more travel options.
“We want to offer some alternatives and we have to start now to have it years from now and I’ve been trying to have rails system for 12 years. So the longer we delay the more expensive it will be,” said Dockery.
Lawmakers plan to meet with the Department of Transportation and Amtrak officials again this summer.
