Gambling Lawsuit Might Have Been Avoided
February 6th, 2008 by flanewsA state senator wants his gambling bill approved before the Florida Supreme Court makes a ruling on the Seminole compact. Senator Steve Geller is proposing a bill to clarify who has the power to approve a compact. Right now the law gives the right to the “State”. Geller said Governor Charlie Crist misinterpreted the law when he signed the gambling pact with the Seminole tribe. Geller has been trying to get his bill passed for six years.
“The governor’s office has taken the position, ‘we’ll the legislature had the opportunity to do this and they didn’t, there for it doesn’t matter to them,’” said Geller. “Well if we sent the bill over before the Supreme Court enters its ruling, I think that could influence their ruling.”
Five other states have filed lawsuits similar to the one heard in the Florida Supreme Court. In each case the courts ruled in favor of the legislature.
