Memorial Held for Murdered Professor
September 16th, 2014 by flanewsFlorida State’s campus is still mourning the loss of a beloved professor gunned down in his home earlier this summer. As Matt Galka tells us, the healing process is ongoing.
Friday will mark two months since Florida State University law professor Dan Markel was murdered. The 41 year old was shot and killed at his home in July.
“It’s such an enormous loss to not have Dan around the building,” said colleague Wayne Logan.
A memorial was held at the FSU law school Tuesday. Markel was born in Canada but friends say his reach was worldwide.
“I have tried in these last weeks to accept as a final gift from him, the will to seek out some sense of gratitude for the life that he lead and the time that I shared with him,” said Brooklyn Law School Vice Dean and friend Michael Cahill.
Police haven’t had much to go on since the father of two’s death. Reggie Garcia was a friend who lives in the same neighborhood.
“I think there’s an increasing feeling that every day that passes that you don’t have an eyewitness or someone who saw the vehicle of interest, it makes it harder and harder to solve the case,” said Garcia.
In an effort to make a breakthrough in the case, the reward for information has gone up to $25,000.
The Tallahassee Police Department released a grainy “vehicle of interest” photo of a Toyota Prius type car shortly after the professor’s death, but there hasn’t been any new info since.
Garrick Pursley’s office at the law school was right down the hall from Markel’s. He says it’s tough to be teaching without his friend.
“I don’t know that these kinds of wounds ever heal 100 percent. He was a towering figure,” said Pursley.
Markel’s family has stressed privacy during the still developing case.
